Safe Space: Who We Were, Who we are, who we want to be
In Safe Space, the gifted fifth-grade authors of J. Hampton Moore Elementary School in Philadelphia and their teacher, Kelly Ann Coughlin, explore the most important relationship of all-the one we have with ourselves. Through heartfelt stories brimming with honesty, creativity, and surprising wisdom, these young writers paint vivid portraits of their past, present, and future selves. Their words are a reminder that we are never alone in our struggles, dreams, or joys. Whether reflecting on family, friendship, fears, or hopes, each piece carries the weight of truth and the spark of imagination. Curated by their proud Creative Writing teacher, this collection is more than just a book-it's an invitation. An invitation to think, to feel, and to connect. Because no matter who you are or where you're from, your story matters. Praise for Safe Space: "A stunning display of depth, emotion, and raw talent-proof that the youngest voices often hold the most powerful stories." Open these pages. Find yourself inside.
empowering young writers: “The Writers Matter” Approach
Launched in middle schools in the fall of 2005, the "Writers Matter" approach was designed to discover ways to improve the fit between actual English curricula, district/state standards and, more recently, the Common Core Curriculum Standards for writing instruction. Adapted from Erin Gruwell's successful Freedom Writers Program, "Writers Matter" develops students' skills in the context of personal growth, understanding others, and making broader connections to the world.
Empowering Young Writers explains and expands on the practical aspects of the "Writers Matter" approach, emphasizing a focus on free expression and establishing connections between the curriculum and students' personal lives. Program creator Robert Vogel, and his co-authors offer proven ways to motivate adolescents to write, work diligently to improve their writing skills, and think more critically about the world.
This comprehensive book will help teachers, administrators, and education students apply and reproduce the "Writers Matter" approach more broadly, which can have a profound impact on their students' lives and social development.

Society Unmasked: Voices of teachers & Students in unprecedented times
Society Unmasked captures the voices of the teachers and students through their writing during the COVID-19,2020-2021 school year that was a time of unimaginable change and disruption. Our country was dealing with a worldwide pandemic, political unrest, and a fight for racial equality. Documentation of these unprecedented times is critical. We sought to capture the voices of all who have lived through the last 12-16 months. In our view, almost no group has been impacted more by the events of 2020-2021, than the teachers who have been on the front line since the start and their students whose lives dramatically changed overnight.
The worldwide pandemic changed every aspect of our lives. We could no longer go to school, play sports, or go to art class. Even going outside to play with friends and neighbors was forbidden. We ran out of toilet paper and food was scarce in grocery stores. We were told to stay home, wear a mask, wash our hands until our skin felt like it wanted to fall off. We encouraged teachers to share their stories and co-create safe spaces with their students. We combined trauma informed pedagogy with literacy to encourage students and teachers to share personal experiences and allow their voices to be heard
Sam’s Story: a journey of self-discovery
The central character in this story is a bright and creative adolescent navigating the challenging period between childhood and adulthood. Sam's journey of self-discovery is further complicated by her learning differences. Many adolescents, especially those with physical, social, verbal, or non-verbal challenges, often believe that hiding behind a symbolic mask helps them feel invisible as they struggle. However, through Sam's story, readers can learn practical strategies for building resilience and self-confidence while facing the many challenges of growing up.
